Dr.
Stephan A. Grupp is the Section Chief of the Cellular Therapy and Transplant Section, Director of the Kelly Center for Cancer Immunotherapy, and Medical Director of the Cell and Gene Therapy Laboratory at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). A pioneer in the field of pediatric oncology, Dr. Grupp’s groundbreaking work has transformed cancer treatment for children around the world. He led the development of CAR T-cell therapy for pediatric leukemia—an innovation that reengineered a child’s own immune cells to attack cancer. This therapy became the first-ever FDA-approved gene therapy in the United States, creating a new frontier in medicine and offering hope to children with cancers once considered untreatable. Beyond his research, Dr. Grupp remains deeply committed to patient care, working every day to improve outcomes for children battling cancer and blood disorders. His vision and leadership continue to shape the future of cellular and gene therapies across the globe.
