Alexis A. Thompson is the Chief of the Division of Hematology and the Elias Schwartz, MD, Endowed Chair in Hematology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. A renowned leader in sickle cell disease research and treatment, Dr. Thompson has dedicated her career to advancing gene therapy and improving quality of life for patients both locally and globally. Her work has helped bring the first gene therapies for sickle cell disease to approval, changing the landscape of care for thousands of patients. A former president of the American Society of Hematology, Dr. Thompson also helped establish the first national learning community for sickle cell research—centering patient and family voices in the pursuit of better care. Her leadership, advocacy, and vision have made a profound impact not only in Philadelphia but around the world, ensuring that children everywhere have access to life-saving innovations in medicine.
